With more and more dog owners taking their dogs on the road, it's important to keep these canine friends safe while traveling.

Dogs can easily distract their drivers, and any sudden stop or turn can transform a dog into a flying object with incredible force. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, an unrestrained 60-pound dog could hit a windshield, back seat or passenger with an impact of 1,2000 pounds in a 30 mile per hour collision.

To protect your canine companion from injury, there are many easy to use safety harnesses on the market. All of them easily attach to any seat belt system and are designed to fit securely around your dog's chest and shoulders. While riding, your pet will have mobility to sit and lie down, but will be unable to roam freely.

Prices start at $13.99, depending on your dog's weight, and can be purchased at most pet supply stores.

Remember, it's not "cool" to drive around with your dog in the back of your truck!
